Cost per year of life, for this pool

The finish cost spread over how long each finish usually lasts in Arizona. A pricier finish can cost less per year.

How the calculator works

Contractors price a resurface by the square feet of interior surface, so that is what the calculator works out first. It adds the floor area to the wall area, which is the perimeter times the average of your shallow and deep ends. Freeform and kidney pools use about 85% of the length times width for the floor, and oval pools use the area of an ellipse.

It then multiplies that area by typical Phoenix-area rates for each finish, and adds draining, refilling and, if you tick it, new waterline tile priced by the foot around the edge. The gallons come from the floor area times the average depth times 7.48, which also shows roughly how long draining takes at the 12 gallon a minute rate many Valley cities allow.

What it leaves out

Steps, benches and sun shelves add some area. A full chip-out instead of a bond coat, crack repair, coping, an attached spa and water features are all priced after an on-site look. That is why the number to plan around is a measured, written quote. See the full cost guide for what moves the price, or compare plaster, quartz and pebble.

A worked example

A 32 by 16 foot rectangle that runs from 3.5 to 6 feet deep has about 970 square feet to refinish and holds about 18,000 gallons. In pebble, the finish alone runs roughly $6,800 to $14,500. With draining and a hose refill, that is about $7,500 to $15,500, in line with the $7,000 to $15,000 Phoenix-area range for pebble.

Questions

Calculator questions

How do I calculate the surface area of my pool?

Add the floor area to the wall area. For a rectangle, the floor is length times width, and the walls are the perimeter times the average depth. A 32 by 16 foot pool that runs from 3.5 to 6 feet deep has about 512 square feet of floor and 456 of wall, so about 970 square feet to refinish.

How much does it cost to resurface a pool per square foot in Phoenix?

Cost guides put white plaster at about $6 to $8 per square foot of interior surface, quartz at $7 to $10, pebble at $7 to $15 and branded Pebble Tec at $10 to $20. Those are the rates the calculator uses.

How accurate is this calculator?

It is a planning ballpark, not a quote. Steps, benches, sun shelves and the slope between ends add area, and prep such as a full chip-out, crack repair and coping are priced after a contractor sees the pool. Use it to sanity check the quotes you get.

How many gallons is my pool?

Multiply the floor area by the average depth and by 7.48 gallons per cubic foot. Most Arizona backyard pools hold roughly 10,000 to 20,000 gallons. The calculator shows yours, which also tells you roughly how long draining takes at your city's limit.

Is a more expensive finish worth it?

Often, if you plan to stay. Plaster usually lasts 7 to 10 years in Arizona and pebble 15 to 20 years or more, so the cost per year of pebble can come out lower even though the upfront price is higher. The table under the calculator shows both for your pool.
